Engagement ring trends evolve with each generation. As far back as the ancient Romans we can start to see trends develop. At that time engagement rings were simple metal bands. But by the middle ages, they were often adorned with sapphires and rubies. In the 18th century, diamonds became popular with the discovery of diamond mines in Brazil.
Settings also evolve and develop over time. In the Edwardian era (early 1900s) engagement ring settings embraced nature-inspired motifs. Art deco geometric features became prominent in the 1920s. And the 1950s saw couples favouring bold solitaire styles and baguette side stones.
Fast-forward to today, and it’s celebrity engagements that tend to set the styles. From bold coloured diamonds to barely-there bands, here are the rings that captured our attention – and influenced countless ring boxes – over the last 10 years.
Engagement Ring Trends
Blake Lively trend: Blush-coloured stones and rose gold (2012)
Blake Lively’s ring was custom-designed by designer-to-the-stars, Lorraine Schwartz for her now husband Ryan Reynolds in 2012. And they certainly knew what they were doing because the style is still trending today.
This gorgeous ring features a 12-carat light pink oval diamond set in rose gold, with a pavé band, and it helped cement the blush-toned trend. Couples love the unique combination of soft femininity with its bold scale. And to this day, rose gold and pale pink demands are a hugely sought-after choice for those after romantic, but still modern, designs with real showpiece impact.

Meghan Markle trend: 3-stone rings with sentimental value (2017)
Meghan Markle’s marriage to Prince Harry was a real-life fairytale, and the ring the couple chose was certainly part of the magic of the engagement. The ring featured a three-carat cushion-cut, conflict-free centre diamond from Botswana. The centre diamond was flanked by two smaller side diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection. All three stones were set in a classic yellow gold band (later updated to a diamond set band).
This was a deeply personal design, first with a lovely nod to the late Princess Diana, Harry’s mother, with the use of her diamonds. And the choice of the Botswana diamond was a sentimental choice as the couple spent time in Botswana during their courtship.
Meghan’s ring sparked the trend toward heirloom and meaning-filled design. Suddenly, couples wanted sparkle, but wrapped in significance, to give their engagement that wonderfully personal and unique touch.

Ariana Grande trend: Toi et moi and non-traditional, artistic designs (2020)
Ariana Grande’s engagement ring made waves in 2020 for its unconventional and artistic flair. In 2020 Dalton Gomez proposed to Ariana with an asymmetrically set oval diamond and round pearl platinum engagement ring.
The ring was unique in that the primary oval diamond had a tilted orientation and it was uniquely paired with a pearl which had family meaning to Ariana.
This setting is modern and slightly quirky – but in the best ways – blending the toi et moi concept (translated from French as ‘you and me’, these designs feature two centre stones instead of one, symbolising both partners in a couple and the bond between them).

Kourtney Kardashian trend: Reinforced the big oval diamond on skinny band trend (2021)
Kourtney Kardashian’s engagement to Travis Barker brought another bold oval-cut diamond into the spotlight. Estimated at 10 to 12 carats, her stone was set on a delicate pavé band, also designed by Lorraine Schwartz.
Similar in concept to Hailey Bieber’s, Kourtney’s ring reinforced the popularity of the big-oval-on-a-skinny-band look, especially within glam-meets-minimalist aesthetics, but took it a little further with the introduction of the pavé feature. The ‘Kardashian effect’ ensured it became one of the most pinned styles of the year and, in fact, the decade.

In her second engagement to Ben Affleck in 2022, Jennifer Lopez’s wowed the world with her extraordinary engagement ring. Designed by Ilan Portugali of Beverly Hills Diamonds, it featured an incredibly rare 8.5-carat, natural green diamond in a radiant-cut solitaire setting.
