Finding your perfect white gold engagement ring

Why choose a white gold engagement ring

White gold has always been a popular choice for engagement rings. From classic solitaire settings to intricate three stone or halo engagement ring designs, white gold is a beautiful, durable metal choice that keeps the stones safe and secure with its elegant colour and versatility.

White gold is created by blending pure gold with carefully selected alloys to help build strength  in the metal but also give it its distinctive pale grey colour. We use 18k gold which is a 75% mix of fine gold and 25% mix of platinum and palladium to give it the beautiful white colour and durability. Our finished jewellery pieces are typically rhodium plated, which gives it that final  bright white appearance whilst also helping to protect the surface from everyday wear.

Crafted in our Brisbane studio

At Nick Ireland, our white gold engagement rings are handcrafted and thoughtfully designed on site in our Brisbane studio/workshop. Guided with over forty years of craftsmanship from Nick Ireland. The placement of each diamond, proportions of the setting, and how the finished ring sits on the hand are all carefully considered to ensure our finished jewellery pieces feel both timeless and balanced.

Many of our clients choose to create their own unique diamond engagement ring. Allowing the ring to be personalised and unique to their preferences. Whilst maintaining the elegance that defines our bespoke engagement rings.

WHITE GOLD ENGAGEMENT RINGS

White gold simply put is gold that appears white. We use 18k White gold which is an alloy of 75% fine gold and 25% platinum and palladium, helping make the colour more white and giving it durability. Because it is 75% yellow (being fine gold) typically 18k white gold has a light grey luster to it, which then gets rhodium plated giving it a beautiful white appearance whilst also helping protect the metal.

White gold has historically always been a more affordable metal than platinum but due to the rising price of Fine gold (up 60% over a year as of March 14th 2026) they are both very similarly priced for a finished piece of jewellery.

Depending on how often the ring is worn and the wear on the ring, we recommend all white gold engagement rings and pieces of jewellery to be rhodium plated from every 6-12 months to every three years. It is always good to pop in to our Brisbane studio to let our master jewellery professionally check your setting to make sure everything is where it needs to be.

Both Metals are excellent choices for engagement rings. Both strong and durable with a beautiful luster, although platinum is a heavier and more dense metal than gold. At Nick Ireland we usually recommend our customers to use platinum on their engagement rings, simply because there is no maintenance like the upkeep of rhodium plating on white gold and platinum is a heavier and more dense metal giving it the most longevity.

There’s a reason why diamond solitaire rings are more expensive than most other ring options couples will have. Big diamonds cost more than small ones, and the solitaire often uses a big stone. Solitaire also requires a diamond with higher values on its 4Cs, as imperfections are more visible in big stones. You can have your own engagement ring created, one that’s exclusively crafted for you.

All of our engagement rings are made in our Brisbane showroom/workshop on site. From designing, to crafting, setting and polishing. Everything we do is made in house at our Brisbane studio and we welcome our clients to come to our Brisbane studio to see where all the magic happens and talk about diamond options and discuss the creation of a custom engagement ring.
